Microsoft announces new Windows security update programme

It’s been nearly two months since a CrowdStrike outage caused Microsoft Windows machines around the world to crash.

CrowdStrike itself has investigated why the incident occurred, and Microsoft released its own analysis shortly after. While most in the industry agree that the CrowdStrike outage was not Microsoft’s fault, it has led some to question whether the company should have allowed security products to have kernel-level access.

That was one of the topics discussed at the Windows Endpoint Security Ecosystem Summit on 10 September between Microsoft, government officials and cybersecurity companies. Kernel-level access allows security products to work at the deepest level, thereby increasing their effectiveness. However, Apple doesn’t provide this level of access because it says it could also be a security risk.

In Microsoft’s case, the thinking is that reducing access to the kernel would mean an update to a security product such as CrowdStrike would not cause the whole Windows system to crash. The meeting comprised Microsoft, government officials and Microsoft Virus Initiative partners — companies that develop endpoint protection and additional security products for Windows.
The group discussed safe deployment practices at Microsoft and shared best practices as a community, including sharing data, tools and documented processes. “We face a common set of challenges in safely rolling out updates to the large Windows ecosystem, from deciding how to do measured rollouts with a diverse set of endpoints to being able to pause or rollback if needed,” Weston said.

A core SDP principle is “gradual and staged deployment of updates sent to customers.”This is something CrowdStrike did not do with its Rapid Response content before the July incident, but staged deployment for all updates are now in place.

Outside Of Kernel Mode
The conversation also explored new platform capabilities Microsoft plans to make available in Windows. For example, Windows 11’s “improved security posture and security defaults enable the platform to provide more security capabilities to solution providers outside of kernel mode.”

Microsoft said customers and ecosystem partners think it’s a good idea to provide additional security capabilities outside of kernel mode “which, along with SDP, can be used to create highly-available security solutions.”As a next step, Microsoft will continue to design and develop this new platform capability with input and collaboration from ecosystem partners to “achieve the goal of enhanced reliability without sacrificing security,” Weston said.Weston also highlighted the importance of having business continuity planning and a major incident response plan in place and “backing up data securely and often.”

Security Experts Respond

Security vendors are supportive of the Microsoft-led plans. For example, ESET said it “supports modifications to the Windows ecosystem that demonstrate measurable improvements to stability, on condition that any change must not weaken security, affect performance, or limit the choice of cybersecurity solutions.”

However, the firm said it “remains imperative that kernel access remains an option for use by cybersecurity products to allow continued innovation and the ability to detect and block future cyberthreats.”Sean Wright, head of application security at Featurespace, “applauds Microsoft for holding this event and coming up with ideas,” but says he thinks “accountability sits with vendors.” ‘After all, it’s their update – they need to take responsibility,’ he said. He stressed the importance of ‘proper testing’ and a ‘more phased rollout’ – two things that were found lacking in CrowdStrike’s botched July update. Wright said kernel access is important for these products to work properly and be fully functional. He noted that ‘a very similar problem happened with CrowdStrike on Linux a few months ago.’ It’s worth noting, Wright said, that multiple vendors have had this access for years with only one major incident. ‘So, yes, the CrowdStrike issue is serious, but it’s extremely rare. I think it’s important to keep that in mind.’

The ‘Vo1d’ Trojan virus has infected more than a million Android TV boxes worldwide!

Android malware, which secretly downloads unwanted software, has reportedly infected users in nearly 200 countries.Antivirus company Dr.Web has flagged an Android malware called Android.Vo1d, which has infected approximately 1.3 million TV boxes in 197 countries. The malware effectively enables a backdoor in the TV Box system that allows attackers to download and install malicious third-party software. Affected device types reportedly include R4 TV box models running Android 7.1.2, TV boxes running Android 12.1, and KJ-SMART4KVIP TV boxes running Android 10.1.

>>>>>>>>>Sony SNYSHD4 – Battery SNYSHD4 5000mAh

微信截图_20240914151118.png

These TV boxes may have been targeted because they run older versions of open-source Android software that may have unpatched vulnerabilities, Dr.Web speculates. It’s currently unclear why attackers are infecting TV boxes, and the source or creator of the malware is unknown. The malware was found on Android-based TV boxes in Brazil, Pakistan, Russia, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Indonesia, Malaysia, and other countries. The malware was most prominent in South America, North Africa, and the Middle East, though Dr.Web did not share how many devices in Europe or North America may have been infected.

The presence of malware on your TV box may sound surprising or strange, but it is possible. One of the best ways to protect your data and TV box from external threats is to keep your TV box or TV stick’s software and firmware up-to-date, as updates often contain patches for security vulnerabilities. You can also install an antivirus programme on your Android TV box, but depending on your circumstances and the value of your device, the hassle may or may not be worth it.

>>>>>>>>>Sony USATIA289AFN2 – Battery USATIA289AFN2 2700mAh

There are also a range of different TV boxes and streaming sticks available, from Roku to Apple, Amazon, or Google if you’re looking for an upgrade. Amazon has shared that it will continue to provide security updates for most of its Fire sticks, Fire TVs, and other streaming devices until at least 2028, while Google recommends keeping your internet router’s firmware updated as a part of best security practices to protect Chromecast devices. In a statement, a Google spokesperson tells PCMag that the compromised TV boxes in question aren’t certified by Google. “These off-brand devices discovered to be infected were not Play Protect certified Android devices.

If a device isn’t Play Protect certified, Google doesn’t have a record of security and compatibility test results,” the rep explains. ‘Play Protect certified Android devices undergo extensive testing to ensure quality and user safety,’ a Google spokesperson added. ‘To help you confirm that your device features the Android TV operating system and Play Protect certification, our Android TV website provides an up-to-date list of partners. You can also take the following steps to check if your device is Play Protect certified.’

Android 15 Limits Sideloaded App Functionality to Protect Users

For advanced users, there is no doubt that the ability to install apps from outside the Google Play Store (i.e. sideloading) is one of the biggest advantages of Android over iOS. Sideloading gives users the freedom to install any app they want, even if it’s not approved by Google or, more importantly, the authorities.

Because it’s easier to distribute apps directly to users than it is to publish them on an app shop like Google Play, many hackers rely on sideloading to infect users’ devices with malware. To address this issue, Google introduced new restrictions in Android 15 that make it harder for sideloaded apps to gain sensitive permissions.

>>>>>>>>LG GD900E BL40E GW505 BL40 – Battery LGIP-520N 1000mAh

微信截图_20240913143309.png

Before I go any further, I need to address Google’s intentions with this change. Is Google restricting what permissions sideloaded apps can obtain because they actually want to protect users, or are they doing it to keep people on the Google Play Store? Given the many court cases and legal battles that Google has been caught up with in recent years, it’s easy to be skeptical that Google has good intentions with this change. However, it’s important to consider two facts. First, sideloading is a common vector for malware due to the lower barrier of entry for distribution. Second, these restrictions don’t apply to any third-party app stores for Android that utilize the operating system’s purpose-built API for installing apps. In fact, Android 15’s restrictions on sideloaded apps are merely an expansion of a security change introduced in a previous version, a change that has not materially impacted third-party app stores and can still be manually disabled by the user. The change I’m referring to is called restricted settings, a feature introduced in Android 13 that makes it harder for sideloaded apps to obtain certain sensitive permissions.

>>>>>>>>LG Exalt VN220 – Battery BL-49H1H 1470mAh

For the purpose of the restricted settings feature, Android considers apps to be “sideloaded” if they were installed from an app that didn’t use the purpose-built installation API designed for app stores. Typically, this includes installations from apps like web browsers, messaging apps, or file managers. If this occurs, then the sideloaded app is denied access to permissions that grant the use of Android’s accessibility and notification listener APIs, which are two of the most powerful APIs the platform offers. However, apps installed using the session-based installation API are not restricted from requesting permissions to use the accessibility or notification listener APIs.

This is because the session-based installation API is typically used by third-party app stores. Google designed these restrictions to not impede third-party app stores, and they also designed them so users who know what they’re doing can still get around them. The permissions to use the accessibility and notification listener APIs aren’t the only sensitive permissions that Android has to offer, though.

The SMS runtime permission lets apps read the user’s entire SMS database. The device admin permission lets apps lock or wipe the device at will. The overlay permission lets apps draw on top of other apps. The usage access permission lets apps track what apps you’re using and how often you’re using them. These permissions are all incredibly powerful, which is why the user has to manually grant them to apps. However, starting with Android 15, these permissions cannot be easily granted to sideloaded apps. Google is extending the Restricted Settings feature to cover all of the permissions I just mentioned as well as the default dialer and SMS roles. Google mentioned this extension in a blog post in May, but they didn’t share the restrictions in full until last week when they released the Android 15 Compatibility Definition Document (CDD).
The section on Restricted Settings in the Android 15 CDD is lengthy, but in a nutshell, Google requires the following permissions and roles to apply the Restricted Settings feature: The Android 15 CDD has a long section on Restricted Settings, but in short, Google requires the following permissions and roles to apply Restricted Settings:

  • Special permissions
    • Accessibility
    • Notification listener
    • Device admin
    • Display over other apps
    • Usage access
  • Roles (Default apps)
    • Dialer
    • SMS
  • Runtime permissions

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra Design Leak: Specs Surpass iPhone 16 Pro

Next year’s Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is expected to feature a thinner, lighter body and significant camera upgrades, according to a new report.Updated on 12 September with a rendering of the controversial new Galaxy S25 Ultra and details on battery life.

>>>>>>>>>>Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 SM-X200N SM-X205N – Battery HQ-6300SA 6820mAh

微信截图_20240913142101.png

Let’s start with the camera: The ultra-wide-angle camera is expected to see major improvements, allowing it to take more detailed photos and videos, while possibly enabling new shooting modes that go beyond the iPhone.Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra—Big Camera Improvements According to the well-known tipster Ice Universe, the Galaxy S25 Ultra will receive an all-new 50-megapixel ultrawide camera featuring a brighter F/1.9 aperture lens. This upgrade represents a significant improvement from the 12-megapixel version found on the Galaxy S24 Ultra and should dramatically increase detail in ultrawide photos, especially in close-up macro shots.
The increase in resolution would also potentially enable 8K video recording from the ultrawide lens for the first time, although there’s no guarantee Samsung would enable this option.

The report expects the new 50-megapixel ultrawide sensor to retain the dimensions of the 12-megapixel Galaxy S24 Ultra version, meaning each pixel will shrink from 1.4µm to 0.7µm in size. Smaller pixels often cause increased noise and grainier images, but Samsung could mitigate this by enabling an optional lower-resolution mode to boost performance in low-light shots. Furthermore, enlarging the lens aperture to F/1.9 (up from F/2.2 on the Galaxy S24 Ultra) would capture around 34% more light with each shot, further boosting image quality, especially in darker scenarios.

>>>>>>>>>>Samsung Galaxy A25 5G A55 A256 – Battery EB-BA256ABS 5000mAh

The Galaxy S25 Ultra’s upgraded ultrawide camera would bring Samsung into line with Apple’s recently announced iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which also feature upgraded ultrawide cameras, up from 12 megapixels to 48 megapixels. However, unlike Samsung, Apple hasn’t widened the lens aperture, which remains at F/2.2. Also, note that the iPhone can’t currently record 8K video despite the new higher-resolution sensors in the iPhone 16 range.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra—Thinner And Lighter Than iPhone 16 Pro Max

The same tipster also expects the Galaxy S25 Ultra to be significantly smaller and lighter than the Galaxy S24 Ultra, at only 8.2mm thick compared to the 8.6mm thickness of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The overall dimensions of the Galaxy S25 Ultra are given as 162.8mm by 77.6mm by 8.2m, and weighing 219g, down from the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s 233g. If these leaked dimensions turn out to be accurate, the Galaxy S25 Ultra will be both thinner and lighter than Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro Max. You can expect Samsung to launch the Galaxy S25 series in January 2025, so plenty of time remains for further updates.

The report goes on to claim that despite its smaller size, the Galaxy S25 Ultra will retain the same 5,000mAh battery capacity and 45W fast charging found in all Galaxy S Ultra models since the 2022 Galaxy S22 Ultra. However, Samsung is expected to upgrade the processor to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which the report claims will be more efficient than the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and will offer a significant increase in battery life compared to this year’s Galaxy S24 Ultra.

World’s strongest battery promises to boost electric car range by 70 per cent

Researchers at Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology have developed the world’s most powerful battery, which paves the way for massless energy storage, could help make mobile phones as thin as a credit card, and could even increase the range of electric cars by 70 per cent, a press release said. Even with the recent increase in the penetration of electric vehicles, the future transition to electrification and fossil fuel-free transport remains uncertain.

Long-distance transport using ships and aircraft requires energy-dense fuels that are light to carry but can provide a large amount of energy. Batteries, on the other hand, provide far less energy than fossil fuels, but are much heavier. This further adds to the weight that a ship or aircraft must carry and makes energy conversion difficult.Structural batteries are a possible solution to the problem since they shoulder load-bearing functions in a device and are no longer deadweights that must be carried around. In the case of a vehicle, this also reduces energy consumption, which translates into a higher range.

Developing structural batteries
A research team led by Leif Asp, a professor of Material and Computational Mechanics, Industrial and Materials Science at Chalmers, has been researching the use of carbon fibers for structural batteries. In 2018, the team confirmed that carbon fibers could store electrical energy and be used as electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. By 2021, the team had developed this battery’s strength and electrical capacity to deliver an energy density of 24 watthours per kg (Wh/kg), which was further increased to 30 Wh/kg in recent reports. While this is far from the storage capacity of standard lithium-ion battery packs, structural batteries do not have to attain these higher capacities to be truly effective. “We have made calculations on electric cars that show that they could drive for up to 70 percent longer than today if they had competitive structural batteries,” said Asp in a statement.

Carbon fiber as electrodes

>>>>>>>>>>>>Realme 12 Pro+ – Battery BLPA35 5000mAh
The structural battery developed at Chalmers is made from composite material and uses carbon fibers for both positive and negative electrodes. In previous iterations of the battery, the core of the positive electrode was made from aluminum foil. On this occasion, the researchers coated the carbon fibers with lithium iron phosphate (LFP). The role of carbon fibre is not limited to the electrodes; it also acts as a reinforcement, collector and support for lithium to be built on the cathode, as well as acting as an electrical collector and active material on the anode. This allows batteries to be manufactured without the use of materials such as copper or aluminium, helping to reduce weight. The lithium ions in the battery are transported through a semi-solid electrolyte, reducing the fire risk.

However, it cannot deliver high power yet, an area the team is focusing on now. The researchers have also increased the stiffness of the battery pack, which enables it to carry loads like aluminum but at a much lower weight. “In terms of multifunctional properties, the new battery is twice as good as its predecessor—and actually the best ever made in the world,” added Asp. “One can imagine that credit card-thin mobile phones or laptops that weigh half as much as today, are the closest in time. It will require large investments to meet the transport industry’s challenging energy needs, but this is also where the technology could make the most difference,” Asp concluded in the press release.

Keeping your Gmail account requires 3 steps

Google dominates the free email market with an estimated 1.8 billion Gmail users. So it’s no surprise that warnings about deleting Gmail accounts would cause concern. So let’s set the record straight and confirm what’s really going on. Yes, Google is deleting Gmail accounts. No, not everyone is at risk because only inactive accounts are targeted. For peace of mind, there are steps you can take to ensure that your Gmail, as well as photo and document content, are not affected. Here’s what you need to know and do.

The Security Reasoning Behind The Gmail Account Deletions

>>>>>>>>>Google Pixel 3 XL – Battery GO13C-B 3430mAhGoogle has invested a lot of time and money into making its Gmail as secure as possible for its users, whether it’s in terms of anti-spam measures, phishing scam protection or account hijacking defences. Even with these protections in place, if an account is left unused for an extended period of time, it is more likely to be stolen.
One of the reasons for the theft of old and unused accounts is weak login credentials and a lack of two-factor authentication. Passwords are often shared between accounts, which is a headache I’ve repeatedly warned about, and this can lead to vulnerabilities in one service affecting the security of another. The end result is that inactive accounts are more vulnerable than active ones.
Three Steps To Take Now To Prevent Your Gmail Account Being Deleted
If you only have one Google account, then your Gmail is perfectly safe from deletion, assuming you have used it within the last two years. The problem is purely with those users who have multiple accounts or maybe ones set up purely to store photos or data that have not been accessed in a long while or forgotten about altogether. Although a forgotten account might seem pointless to save, it could contain content that you may wish to access further down the road. That said, here’s what Google considers activity.

1.Read or send an email.
2.Share a photo or watch a YouTube video while signed into the relevant Google account.
3.Use Google Drive or Search. That’s it. Doing these things at least once a year should ensure that your account doesn’t get deleted. These actions can be performed on any device, as this is account-specific policy. If it’s been a while since you’ve accessed an account, I highly recommend running a Google Account Security Check to make sure you have the necessary security measures in place to protect it.

Sony PlayStation 5 Pro: Higher Price, More Powerful Performance

After years of rumours, speculation and hype, Sony has confirmed that it will be releasing a more powerful and expensive PlayStation 5 console.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>Sony VAIO 585755 – Battery 585755 3000mAh

The PS5 Pro will be able to display more advanced graphics and display the most demanding games at a higher, more consistent frame rate.
But this increased performance comes at a price: the PS5 Pro will be Sony’s most expensive console to date.

It will be available on 7 November this year for £699.99, hundreds of pounds more expensive than the PS5.
“The price point of the PS5 Pro will inevitably cause a lot of commentary,” analyst Piers Harding-Rolls from research firm Ampere said.
He said the firm appeared to be betting that the console’s improved performance would encourage users to upgrade their existing hardware and spend more on software.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>Sony VAIO VGP-BPS11 VGP-BPX11 BPS11 VGN-TZ121 TZ9 – Battery VGP-BPL11 5800mAh
Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PS5, said it was “the most powerful console we’ve ever built”.

He said it sought to resolve a problem gamers had faced for years – whether to play a console game in so-called “fidelity mode”, which favours visuals, or “performance mode”, which makes a game smoother, though at the cost to how it looks.

He said the PS5 Pro was about “removing that decision, or at least narrowing that divide”.

GamesIndustry.biz head Christopher Dring told the BBC it was “a very targeted console” for PlayStation’s “most enthusiastic audience”.
“The console industry has had a tough time this year, with falling sales of PS5, Xbox Series S and X, and the ageing Nintendo Switch,” he said.
“PS5 Pro isn’t going to change that situation.”
But he said Sony might have one eye on the most anticipated game in the world – Grand Theft Auto VI – which is due to release next year.
“When GTA 6 does launch, PlayStation will be able to say to players that the game will look best on PS5 Pro,” he said.
Pro consoles
Companies have released updated versions of their own consoles with minor revisions for decades, but this release indicates the comparatively new trend of “pro” hardware is here to stay.
Generally, this means hardware changes to current-generation consoles that lets games look better – but critically these tweaked consoles don’t have exclusive games.
In other words, games will still be released for PS5, and gamers can choose whether to play them on a regular console or a pro model with differences in graphics and performance.
Paul Tamburro, from news website PlayStation LifeStyle, said fans had been hoping the console could “bridge the gap” between performance and fidelity modes, and the upgrade would help.
“However, it also feels that the console doesn’t do enough to justify that steep price point,” he said.
“It launching without a disc drive and still only targeting 60 FPS is disappointing.
“This isn’t an easy sell to current PS5 owners.”
It’s Sony’s second major foray into this space after 2016’s PS4 Pro, which brought 4k graphics to the original PlayStation 4.
And it comes three years after Nintendo released its own take on a pro model – a Nintendo Switch with a larger, better screen.
Graphics leap
Today’s announcement from Sony is not as significant as the PS4’s jump to 4k graphics, but it still represents a step forward in home consoles.
It comes at a time when PCs have been getting increasingly powerful, with the release of Nvidia’s Geforce 40 series of graphics cards in 2022, which have put PCs firmly ahead of home consoles in the race for the best visuals.
However, it’s worth remembering that just one of these graphics cards can cost as much as an entire PS5, so consoles tend to be at their best visually and at their best price.
As with the previous generation of consoles, this release means that Sony will now offer multiple versions of the PS5 to consumers, with varying prices and specifications.
Prior to the release, rumours were rife as fans speculated on what features the upgraded console might have.
Chief among them were unsubstantiated claims that the PS5 Pro would be backwards compatible with games from previous Sony consoles – some reports claimed this dated back to the original PlayStation.
Nothing in the announcement confirms these rumours.

Apple Introduces New AirPods Max 2024 – A Slight Upgrade

Apple unveiled the new AirPods Max headset wireless headphones at its September 2024 event. The headphones were announced by CEO Tim Cook alongside the iPhone 16 series phones and AirPods 4 wireless headphones. The updated model appears to be a very mild tweak to the first-generation AirPods Max, rather than an entirely new model. They have the exact same design, with the only difference being a switch from the old Lightning connector to USB-C connectivity and a wealth of new colour options. These include new midnight (blue), starlight (purple) and orange options.

The shift to USB-C will be welcome, but sadly it appears Apple hasn’t made any wider improvements, instead promising they would continue to offer the same “highest fidelity sound quality” and “personalised spatial audio for film and music” as the first generation. The new version will also retail for the same $549 as the original AirPods Max when they launch in September. They will cost £499 in the UK.

This goes against past rumblings that the company would launch a more significant next generation of its wireless headphones, commonly referred to in pre-event rumours as the AirPods Max 2.

They are expected to address some of the shortcomings of the original, such as the inability to deliver lossless audio, even when connected via cable to a compatible Apple source. This has been a desired feature from the What Hi-Fi? review team since Apple added lossless audio tracks to Apple Music in 2021. As such, the lack of a lossless-supporting upgrade feels like a key omission. We haven’t had a chance to test the AirPods Max to check for any sound improvements. But even if there aren’t, if their sound quality is comparable to the original AirPods Max, they should still be a solid choice for Apple fans.

As with recent years, the iPhone 16 is actually four phones: a Pro and non-Pro version, in two different sizes. The Pro includes improved cameras and different materials, and both the larger and smaller sizes also expanded.

Speaking at the event to unveil the new devices, Apple chief executive Tim Cook said these were the first iPhones to be designed “from the ground up for Apple Intelligence” and that the new “personal intelligence system” would have a “profound impact” for users.“The innovation and invention these products deliver will continue to deepen the meaningful impact they have on all of our lives,” Mr Cook said. “I’m proud of our teams and what they’ve accomplished and I can’t wait for you to experience these amazing products.”The AI-powered tools use “personal context” to provide help, Apple said, for example offering edits to writing or notes made in almost any app, or being able to quickly find a specific photo or moment within a video based on a typed description.

The tools can also be used to find specific emails, flight details and other personal information instantly, as well as offer email summaries and prioritise certain notifications and enable users to create their own emoji or new image. The tech giant confirmed that the new devices will go on sale on September 20, with Apple Intelligence tools rolling out later via a software update. Ben Wood, smartphone expert and principal analyst at CCS Insight, said that while Apple has yet to fully shake off the perception that its phone launches are becoming more low-key, its new AI tools are still compelling. The tech giant also unveiled the redesigned and updated Apple Watch Series 10, which will have the ability to detect sleep apnea for the first time.
